Knowing the model and body type (Jetta wagon only was a MKIV with a BEW even into 2005 but the Jetta sedan got the newer BRM engine). The BRM is almost the same engine as the BEW with the exception of the EGR system which is much more involved and the cam has a steeper profile causing it to wear faster but it gives it a bit more torque.

TDI is the T urbo version of the D irect I njected engine. m-Tdi is the direct injected Turbo engine with m echanical injection VE pump. The engine i am using, ALH type (after the year 1999.5) came only with a electronic injection VE pump. Also the predecessor of the ALH engine generation often referred to as the 1z. The Volkswagen MK4 GTI was first introduced in 1999 and ran production through 2005. When the MK4 GTI was first introduced, it featured a 2.0L but that only lasted one model year, 1999.5. However, Volkswagen moved to a 1.8L Turbo engine in 2000 through 2005 for the GTI. The 1.8L Turbo engine put down 178hp and 173lb-ft. That is the idle setting when the cold start lever is pulled. Yellow arrow points to the vertically oriented 'slow idle' screw. That sets the idle when the cold start lever is pushed in.
A tiny amount of pump shaft movement makes a BIG change in injection timing. If you think you moved it, it was probably too much. As mentioned above, 1999.5-2003 1.9 TDIs are the same. Older and newer are not, but harnesses may vary depending on equipment/options between models such as NB/Jetta/Golf.
